RHT: From Nasdaq to NYSE

After the Oracle desease several months ago, some of us may think/believe Red Hat is dying and suffering. Nevertheless, today's story proves those clairvoyant-wannabes' prediction might be wrong. RHT now is listed on NYSE (formerly on Nasdaq).

Solaris 10 11/06 Released

Yay, Solaris 10 11/06 aka Solaris 10 Update 3 has been released. Thanks to OSNews.com for the update :D

Solaris 10 11/06 Released

Sun has released Solaris 10 11/06 today. Internally, we called this "Update 3". The biggie features for this update are Trusted Extensions and Secure by Default. Yes, all of the security features you loved back in Trusted Solaris, are now standard as part of Solaris 10. This isn't just for the feds either. Banks love it. Wall St. loves it. Corporations that need to follow Sarbanes-Oxley love it.

I'm downloading them rite now!

Unbreakable Linux; Red Hat responds

As expected, Red Hat reacts :D

Excerpt from http://www.redhat.com/promo/unfakeable/
-----8<-----
Red Hat responds.

The opportunity for Linux just got bigger. Oracle's support for Linux reaffirms Red Hat's technical industry leadership and the end of proprietary Unix. It's no accident that Red Hat was chosen #1 in value two years running. Want to know what else we think? Read on.

Red Hat & Oracle Partnership

Q: Does Oracle's recent announcement change Red Hat's partnership with Oracle?

A: No. Red Hat has had a productive 7-year relationship with Oracle. Red Hat will continue to work closely with Oracle to optimize Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss middleware subscriptions for Oracle products, and to support joint customers.

Red Hat & JBoss Subscriptions

Q: Does Oracle's announcement include support for the Red Hat Application Stack, JBoss, Hibernate, Red Hat GFS, Red Hat Cluster Suite, and Red Hat Directory Server?

A: No. Oracle does not support any of these leading open source products.

Hardware Compatibility

Q: Oracle says their Linux support includes the same hardware compatibility and certifications as Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Is this true?

A: No. Oracle has stated they will make changes to the code independently of Red Hat. As a result these changes will not be tested during Red Hat's hardware testing and certification process, and may cause unexpected behavior. Hence Red Hat hardware certifications are invalidated.

Software Compatibility

Q: Oracle says their Linux support includes the same software compatibility and ISV certifications of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Is this true?

A: No. Oracle has stated they will make changes to the code independently of Red Hat. These changes will not be tested during Red Hat's software testing and certification process, and may cause unexpected behavior. Hence Red Hat software certifications are invalidated.

Binary Compatibility

Q: Will Oracle's Linux support be binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux so that my applications continue to work?

A: There is no way to guarantee that changes made by Oracle will maintain API (Application Programming Interface) or ABI (Application Binary Interface) compatibility; there may be material differences in the code that will result in application failures. Compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux can only be verified by Red Hat's internal test suite.

Source Code Compatibility

Q: Will Oracle's product result in a "fork" of the operating system?

A: Yes. The changes Oracle has stated they will make will result in a different code base than Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Simply put, this derivative will not be Red Hat Enterprise Linux and customers will not have the assurance of compatibility with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux hardware and application ecosystem..

Updates

Q: Oracle says they will provide the same updates as Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Can they do this?

A: There are multiple requirements to building binary compatible software. One piece is the source code; another is the build and test environment. While Oracle may be able to take the source code at some point after a Red Hat update release, obviously their build and test environment will be inherently different than that of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. For similar reasons, there is no guarantee that the source code for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux update will work correctly when integrated into Oracle's modified Linux code base.

Support & Maintenance Lifecycle

Q: In order to get support and maintenance for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, do you need to upgrade to the most recent version?

A: No. Red Hat subscribers enjoy support and updates for all versions for up to 7 years. Throughout that time, Red Hat provides regular maintenance releases as part of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription. This is supplemented through our support services by a 'hot-fix' process that provides critical bug fixes on a customer-specific basis. Oracle "reserves the right to desupport certain Enterprise Linux program releases" as part of their Oracle Enterprise Linux support policies.

Support Level Flexibility

Q: Does Red Hat allow you to tailor your support level to your workload?

A: Yes. Many customers match their Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription level to their application SLA requirements. For example, customers may choose a Basic subscription for non-mission critical file and print servers, while selecting Premium subscriptions for database servers. Oracle does not allow this flexibility - their support policy reads: "If acquiring Enterprise Linux Premier Support, all of your Oracle supported systems must be supported with Enterprise Linux Premier Support."

Security

Q: Can Oracle produce timely security updates to Red Hat Enterprise Linux as they stated?

A: No. There will be a delay between the time a Red Hat Enterprise Linux update is issued and the time the source code makes its way to Oracle. There is no guarantee that the source code for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux update will work correctly when integrated into Oracle's Linux code base; this integration and test will take additional time. In the case where the update corrects critical security flaws, Oracle customers may be exposed to additional risk.

Linux Assurance

Q: Red Hat Enterprise Linux has government security certifications including Common Criteria Evaluated Assurance Level (EAL) 4+/Controlled Access Protection Profile (CAPP). Will Oracle's version of Linux inherit these certifications?

A: No. Common Criteria evaluations are conducted on a specific configuration of software and hardware. Any changes to the software such as those Oracle has announced will invalidate certification.

Customer Collaboration

Q: Will Oracle's Linux customers have the same degree of influence over Oracle's Linux as Red Hat's customers do with Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

A: The support we provide for Red Hat Enterprise Linux starts when Red Hat and its customers collaborate in the design of new versions. This collaboration extends through the development, testing, and production deployment of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Vendors of a derivative distribution are simply not positioned to provide their customers the same collaboration opportunity.

Support Partners

Q: Hardware vendors such as Dell, HP, and IBM provide support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. How is Oracle's support offering different?

A: Red Hat's hardware partners provide front line support to customers, backed by Red Hat. Red Hat has a close contractual relationship with these partners, which requires training, well defined escalation paths, Red Hat back-line support, and cooperative customer issue management. Our joint customers enjoy the same degree of collaborative participation as any Red Hat customer.

What to make of Oracle vs. Red Hat?
http://www.linux-watch.com/news/NS8026824348.html

Database - big time (DB2, MS-SQL), small time (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Sybase, Informix)
Application - SAP (tak nampak ada lagi selain SAP yg berani lawan)
*terkini OS - Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SuSE Enterprise Linux (silap-silap mengundang lawan dengan Solaris)

Red Hat Developer Day: A Post Mortem

My presentation:
  • need to improve my presentation skill, English/Manglish & interaction skill with audience (I didn't give any presentation since I left MMU - I knew it's not an excuse, hehe)
  • just realize it's better if i talk either high-availability or load-balancing, not both - just to make things simpler + focus
  • overall: i rate it as fair (wonder what others say)

Others:
  • met several Red Hat guys/gals; Ng Hak Beng (former mentor, will be my mentor again. how cliche!), Eugene Teo (#myoss chatter), Sivaram Shunmugam (HPC master) & Quah Hak Teng - enjoy chatting with them
  • met old friends; Che Zul, Lotso, Airocom/PERNEC staff, Arafat, etc
  • can't wait to see Xen, Stateless Linux in RHEL 5
  • can't wait to see JBoss becomes a big player

Streamyx Users - Can You Open Wikipedia?

Erghhh, Hafiz aka Mypapit & I noticed that Streamyx IP's are unable to access Wikipedia website at present. First, I suspect there is problem with DNS server. After querying, it seems my hypothesis is wrong :D

[root@kuli ~]# host en.wikipedia.org
en.wikipedia.org is an alias for rr.wikimedia.org.
rr.wikimedia.org is an alias for rr.yaseo.wikimedia.org.
rr.yaseo.wikimedia.org has address 211.115.107.162
[root@kuli ~]# host en.wikipedia.org 202.188.1.5
Using domain server:
Name: 202.188.1.5
Address: 202.188.1.5#53
Aliases:

en.wikipedia.org is an alias for rr.wikimedia.org.
rr.wikimedia.org is an alias for rr.yaseo.wikimedia.org.
rr.yaseo.wikimedia.org has address 211.115.107.162

Solution:
-Use Google Cached service. E.g: http://72.14.235.104/search?q=cache:7onl-F7c6PgJ:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WAP
-Use proxy. I try tor, now i can access Wikipedia website :)
-Use other ISP's. From my observation, Jaring's IP's are not affected with this problem

To our beloved Streamyx users, what is your experience?

Update:
On 30th August 2006, 9.25AM; I'm able to open Wikipedia website. Yay!

CA Masterclass- Protecting and Recovering the Computing Environment Against Disasters

Got invitation from CA.....

CA Masterclass- Protecting and Recovering the Computing Environment Against Disasters

Topic: Protecting and Recovering the Computing Environment Against Disasters

The continuous availability of the technology infrastructure that supports business processes has never been as critical and far-reaching as it is today.

Any disruptions — especially normal access to data — will effectively interrupt the business. The survival rate for businesses that suffer such events is only 6%!

To prevent this from happening, an effective discovery recovery plan must be in place. With CA’s Recovery Management solutions, preparing for disaster goes beyond just about doing traditional backups and restores, to providing quick recovery with minimum downtime.

At this workshop, learn how CA solutions can give you complete peace of mind if dis! aster strikes.

Dalam RHEL Ada ReactOS

Tatkala fikiran melayang memikirkan nasib badan, ternampak si Najib tengah testing ReactOS guna Qemu. Apa lagi, terus mintak ISO & test pada VMware Workstation.

dalamrheladareactos dalamrheladareactos-2

Host OS: RHEL 4 Update 3 ES
Guest OS: ReactOS 0.3.0

Nota:
  • Semasa guna ReactOS, mungkin berlaku kejadian Blue Screen of Death - biasalah tu :) Tiada apa yang perlu dirisaukan, reboot sahaja.
  • Cecilia Cheung memang lawa :D

httpd_disable_trans=0

Voila! Servis httpd berjaya dihidupkan. Hasil yang berjaya:

Hari Ini Dalam Sejarah - RHCE

Alhamdulillah :)
http://www.redhat.com/training/certification/verify/?rhce_cert_display:certno=804006728020597&rhce_cert_display:verify_cb=Verify

Al-kisah:
Suatu ketika dahulu, pada awal bulan Mei 2002 (Hmmm, masa aku Gamma level kat MMU), aku buka 1 topik di ITTutor untuk berbincang pasal RHCE. Hanya selepas 4 tahun nampaknya baru aku berjaya merealisasikan impian tersebut. Fuhh.....Minggu nie aku mengikuti kursus RH300 di Training Choice - 4 hari RHCE Rapid Track Course + 1 hari RHCE Lab Exam. Di sini aku nak kongsi beberapa pengalaman & tips (rahsia kejayaan eh) untuk dijadikan teladan bersama:

Apa soalan dia eh?
Sorry lah, aku tak boleh bagitau. Dah sign non-disclosure agreement maaa!

Baca & fahamkan FAQ
Dapatkan FAQ tentang RHCE di http://www.redhat.com/training/rhce/rhce_faq.html

Jangan jadi bodoh sombong
Kalau rasa tak tau, bertanyalah kepada RHCI (Red Hat Certified Instructor). Jangan malu nak bertanya, anda tak rugi apa-apa pun dengan bertanya. Berinteraksilah sebaik mungkin dengan RHCI anda. Syukur kerana Mr. Kelvin Lai (RHCI aku) adalah seorang yang amat peramah, cool & suka berkongsi ilmu.

Masuklah kelas RHCE Rapid Track Course
Ya, saya tahu anda sangat 1337 (apa kejadahnya satu-tiga-tiga-tujuh nie, mengada btol).

Well, I'm succeed :)

Aku nak cram/braindump ajelah, ok tak?
Hah, jangan sesekali nak cram/braindump. Anda takkan berjaya kalau sekadar mengingati fakta berkaitan RHEL.

Apa buku yg seeloknya aku guna utk study?
Secara jujurnya, aku tak gunakan mana-mana buku pun :) Aku cuma baca & pelajari dokumentasi RHEL, kemudian praktikan. Di samping tu, handout yg diberikan semasa kelas RHCE Rapid Track Course amatlah berguna :D

Practice Makes Perfect
Apa benda aku mengarut nie, damn it.

Kenapa aku cakap camtu? - sebab aku sendiri kerja hari-hari play around dgn RHEL untuk setup webserver, mail server, cluster etc. So, bila masuk kelas RHCE Rapid Track course aku takderlah terkejut sangat. Masa exam pun aku cuba bayangkan aku berada di client site tengah toubleshoot/install/configure RHEL :)

Perlu ke tahap 1337 untuk dapatkan RHCE?
Nope, never. Aku tak 1337 (damn it, satu-tiga-tiga-tujuh lagi) pun tapi pass jugak :) Yang penting, usaha bersungguh-sungguh. Usaha tangga kejayaan :)

Belajar daripada pengalaman orang lain

Solat Jumaat

Acknowledgement:
  • Pihak pengurusan syarikat yg sudi menaja aku
  • Training Choice - breakfast + tea break boleh tahan menunya. Nasi goreng + sambal tu memang kaww baik punya. Nescafe & nestum kat pantry dah jadi makanan harian aku untuk 5 hari nie :D Bab makan, memang world class Training Choice nie :)
  • Kelvin Lai - RHCI/RHCX yang banyak membantu & tak lokek ilmu
  • Mak & abah - of course, kerana ambil berat & restu
  • Anis Husna - yg banyak memberi dorongan, tolong kejut, tolong doakan kejayaan & juga yg mula-mula tengok official result aku
  • Azri, Chan, Indra, Redzwan - rakan seperjuangan semasa training & exam. Nice to see you guys :)

Software Engineer, Google.com

This position is available in Mountain View, CA and Dublin, Ireland.

Are you part ace coder, part adrenaline junkie? Do you have a knack for
seeing a problem and immediately discerning the likely solution? Maybe you
have been coding for years, are bored with the old
design-build-review-test-ship-repeat routine, and yearn for some
faster-paced challenges? Or perhaps you are a seasoned software engineer who
is also a genius at jockeying networks and administering UNIX clusters.

We are looking for top-notch, thrill-seeking Software Engineers to join the
Google.com Engineering team. Google.com Engineers are in the thick of
everything involved with keeping Google running, from code-level
troubleshooting of service anomalies to safeguarding the availability of our
most popular services; from monitoring and response to building new
automation infrastructure to balancing the desire for change management with
the need for stability. All team members must have strong analytical and
troubleshooting skills, fluency in coding, good communication skills and
most of all enthusiasm for tackling the complex problems of scale which are
uniquely Google. We tackle challenging, novel situations every day, and work
with just about every other engineering and operations team at Google in the
process.

In this role you will need:

* Expertise in coding, analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale
distributed systems.
* Experience in a high-volume or critical production service
environment.
* Strong understanding of IP networking, including the ability to
analyze network behavior, performance and application issues using standard
tools like tcpdump.

Qualifications:

* 0-15 years experience.
* 3+ years developing web-based applications.
* Expertise in data structures, algorithms, and complexity analysis.
* Fluency in one or more of: C, C++, Java.
* Fluency in one of more of: Shell, PHP, Perl or Python.
* Ability to handle periodic on-call duty, as well as out-of-band
requests.
* Solid working knowledge of UNIX, preferably Linux.
* Tack-sharp analytical abilities.
* A strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive.
* Fluent written communication and unusual verbal agility are strong
assets.
* SQL experience a plus, MySQL a plus.
* Experience leading short projects involving outside teams is a plus.
* BA/BS in Computer Science, MS or PhD is preferred.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unix System / Applications Administrator, Google.com

This position is available in Mountain View, CA and Dublin, Ireland.

Are you:

* ...a seasoned Unix jockey, database wizard, performance specialist,
networking guru, and code slinger all rolled into one?
* ...looking for the next cool problem to solve, in a fast-paced and
engineering-driven environment?
* ...into writing scripts which perform practically the entire job you
once held earlier in your career?
* ...entertained in your off hours by taking things apart just to see
how they work? Are you successful putting them back together when you're
done?
* ...excited by the idea of making Google even faster, more reliable,
more available, more - well, Googly?

If you answered "Yes" to more than three of the above questions, you may be
our kind of System Admin! Keep reading.

Google.com team members are involved in every facet of Google's production
site. From design issues to troubleshooting, from performance analysis to
capacity planning, from DNS to networking to application [mis]behavior,
Google.com engineers are ultimately responsible for making sure that Google
always works. We take that responsibility very very seriously, but if you
think you've got what it takes then we're eager to talk with you.

Working in the Google.com team, you will wear many hats for Google's entire
production site: first responder, performance analyst, service architect,
system/database administrator, capacity planner, tools developer, monitoring
expert, and technical evangelist.

In this role you will need:

* Expertise in UNIX system administration, including configuration,
troubleshooting, and automation.
* Fluency in at least one scripting/coding language.
* Experience running high-traffic web services, including requirements
and capacity analysis, service configuration, monitoring and
troubleshooting, and change management.
* Strong understanding of IP networking, including familiarity with the
functionality, operating, and failure modes of common networking devices,
and the ability to analyze network behavior, performance and application
issues using standard tools like tcpdump.

Requirements:

* 3 - 5 years experience with UNIX systems administration (5-15 years
for Senior position).
* Solid scripting skills in Shell, PHP, Perl or Python.
* Proven technical troubleshooting and performance tuning experience.
* Experience in a high-volume or critical production service
environment.
* Ability to handle periodic on-call duty as well as out-of-band
requests.
* Tack-sharp analytical abilities.
* A strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive.
* Fluent written communication and unusual verbal agility are strong
assets.
* SQL experience a plus, MySQL a plus.
* Experience leading short projects involving outside teams is a plus.
* BA/BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.

Sophos Anti Virus 5.0 on RHEL 4

  • Web-based GUI untuk configuration

Patutlah Syarikat X nie makin hilang kehormatan - shame on you dude! Sudahlah buat kerja bodoh/bangang yg tak berfaedah, pengecut pulak tu. Kalau anda rasa diri anda terlalu 1337, jangan setakat pandai mengutuk & condemn aje, sebaliknya beri kritikan & komen yg membina - jadilah masyarakat yg bertanggungjawab.

Ewl ~
